A forest is more than a collection of trees. It is a perfectly balanced ecosystem where plants and animals exist together, a place where everything is connected and needs each other to live. Forests are also of enormous value to us as humans. They provide us directly and indirectly with food, regulate the water system, and form a natural buffer against climate change. Trees store CO₂ in their trunks, roots, and the soil, and in this way help to cool the earth.
Still, things are not going well with this lifeline. We are losing forests worldwide at a very fast pace because of agriculture, livestock farming, mining, and infrastructure projects, and with that many animals are also losing their place to live. This shows itself, for example, in the warming of the earth. Natural phenomena such as floods, extreme temperatures, heavy storms, and long droughts are not only becoming worse but also more regular and in environments where this normally is not the case.
A distressing example is the Atlantic Rainforest, which stretches across Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. This unique area is home to hundreds of tree species and an exceptionally rich biodiversity, but more than 80% of it has now been lost. The World Wide Fund for Nature is working here to protect existing forests and to bring back new ones. By sustainably cultivating, planting, and caring for native trees, the soil is restored and new habitats are created for countless animals.
The goal is ambitious: to plant 1 trillion trees worldwide by 2050. With the support of partners and donors, including us as a Business Supporter, step by step work is being done on forests that will continue to grow not only today but also in the future. In this way, we contribute together to a livable planet and richer biodiversity. Not only for ourselves, but also for the animals and for the generations to come.
