What is an N05 hydraulic rod seal?

The N05 is a compact U-ring for sealing the moving piston rod in hydraulic systems and standard cylinders. The profile is single acting and intended for applications in which hydraulic pressure is applied to the seal from one side.

The combination of its symmetrical profile, recessed sealing lip and fabric-reinforced back supports reliable sealing around the rod. According to the data sheet, the N05 provides excellent sealing performance, including within the low-pressure range.

Construction of the N05 rod seal

The N05 hydraulic rod seal has a compact, symmetrical profile with a recessed sealing lip. The sealing section is made from NBR. The back consists of a combination of cotton fabric and NBR.

Each material section has its own function within the profile. The NBR section provides sealing around the piston rod, while the reinforced back contributes to extrusion reliability and reduced friction.

Single-acting seal for one-sided pressure loads

As a single-acting rod seal, the N05 is intended for a one-sided pressure load. The seal must therefore be positioned in the groove so that the sealing lip is correctly oriented towards the pressure side.

The direction in which hydraulic pressure builds up must be considered during selection and installation. The rod dimensions and available installation space must also match the selected N05 profile.

Fabric-reinforced back against gap extrusion

The back of the N05 consists of a combination of cotton fabric and NBR. According to the data sheet, this fabric section prevents the sealing material from being forced into the sealing gap under pressure.

The fabric section also reduces friction. The combination of the NBR sealing section and reinforced back provides high extrusion reliability for the N05 rod seal.

Applications and product advantages

The N05 hydraulic rod seal is intended for hydraulic applications and standard cylinders. Its reliable design has a broad application spectrum and is suitable for moderately demanding applications in general industry.

Product advantages include excellent sealing performance, even at low pressure, simple snap-on assembly and high extrusion reliability. The N05 also offers a good price-performance ratio and is manufactured by certified external suppliers.

N05 rod seal made from NBR and cotton fabric

The sealing section of the N05 is made from NBR. A combination of cotton fabric and NBR is used for the reinforced back.

During selection, these materials must be assessed in combination with the medium, temperature, pressure, sliding speed and conditions within the installation space.

Media resistance of the N05

The N05 is suitable for hydraulic oils according to DIN 51524 part 1-3 and for lubricating oils. The rod seal can also be used with lubricating greases based on mineral oils.

The specified media also include the flame-retardant hydraulic fluids HFA, HFB and HFC according to VCMA 24317. When selecting the seal, verify that the medium falls within its stated media resistance.

Technical application limits of the N05

The N05 hydraulic rod seal has a temperature range of -30 to +100 °C. Its maximum sliding speed is 0,5 m/s and the maximum permitted pressure is 20 MPa.

These application limits are maximum values and may not all be reached at the same time. The suitability of the rod seal must therefore be assessed using the complete combination of temperature, pressure, sliding speed, medium and installation conditions.

Conformity, approvals and certificates

Requirements for the cylinder housing, piston rod and installation space

The cylinder housing and piston rod must be chamfered to prevent damage to the seal. The length and angle of these installation chamfers must correspond to the installation-space drawing.

The surface roughness of the groove flanks must be Ra ≤ 3 µm. The groove base must have a surface roughness of Ra ≤ 1,8 µm. A surface roughness of Ra ≤ 0,4 µm applies to the mating surface.

Installation of the N05 rod seal

The N05 must be installed in an axially open groove. Deburr sharp edges and provide them with seamless chamfers and radii. Carefully clean the installation space before assembly and remove dust, dirt, metal chips and other contaminants.

Do not pull the seal over sharp edges, threaded ends or cavities such as feather key grooves during installation. Use a mounting sleeve if necessary to protect the sealing lip and fabric-reinforced back.

Heating the seal in oil to 80 °C makes the sealing material more elastic and simplifies installation. The space between the sealing lips can be filled with approximately 40% grease.

Storage of the N05 rod seal

The N05 must be stored at a temperature below 25 °C. Avoid direct heat sources, direct sunlight and condensation in the storage room. Do not expose the seal to ozone or ionizing radiation.

The storage recommendations are based on the revision of ISO 2230 dated 16.09.1992. Observe all specified environmental conditions during storage.

Selecting the correct N05 rod seal

When selecting an N05 hydraulic rod seal, first check the required piston-rod dimensions, available installation space and direction of the one-sided pressure load. Also verify that an axially open groove is available.

Then assess the temperature range of -30 to +100 °C, maximum sliding speed of 0,5 m/s and maximum pressure of 20 MPa. These values may not all be reached at the same time. Check the medium, surface requirements, installation conditions and any compound-dependent approvals as well.
