What is an SNI43 rod seal?

The SNI43 is an asymmetrical U-ring for sealing moving piston rods. The profile is single acting and intended for applications with one-sided pressure load.

The seal has an inner main sealing lip and a tight fit on the outer diameter. An integrated V-spring actively preloads the sealing lip, making the SNI43 suitable for high pressures and vacuum.

Design of the SNI43 hydraulic seal

The sealing element of the SNI43 is made of carbon-filled PTFE. The asymmetrical profile features an inner main sealing lip that contacts the piston rod.

A V-spring made of stainless steel 1.4310 according to DIN EN 1008-1 is used as the preload element. The profile also has a tight fit on the outer diameter for positioning in the installation groove.

Active preloading by a stainless-steel V-spring

The V-spring actively preloads the sealing lip. This preloading provides static tightness and supports the sealing effect when no or only limited hydraulic pressure is present.

The actively preloaded sealing lip makes the SNI43 suitable for applications involving high pressures and vacuum. The installation direction must correspond to the one-sided pressure load.

Asymmetrical sealing lips for an optimised sealing effect

According to the data sheet, the asymmetrical sealing lips provide an optimised sealing effect. The inner main sealing lip forms the functional contact with the moving piston rod.

The profile combines this sealing effect with a tight fit on the outer diameter. During selection, the pressure direction, position of the main sealing lip and available installation space must be coordinated.

Low friction without stick-slip effect

The SNI43 provides low friction, even at low sliding speeds. According to the data sheet, no stick-slip effect occurs.

The profile also has high wear resistance. These properties form part of the functional advantages of the seal within the specified operating limits.

Suitable for dry running and deficient lubrication

The SNI43 is suitable for dry-running and deficient-lubrication conditions. This property must be assessed in combination with the applied temperature, pressure, sliding speed and medium.

For installation, the data sheet nevertheless specifies that the piston rod must be oiled or greased beforehand. This installation requirement therefore remains applicable.

Applications and product advantages

The SNI43 rod seal is intended for stationary hydraulics and standard cylinders. The profile has a broad application spectrum and is described as a reliable design for moderately demanding applications in general industry.

The stated advantages include high chemical resistance, low friction, high wear resistance, a wide temperature range and high extrusion reliability. The SNI43 also offers a good price-performance ratio and is manufactured by certified external suppliers.

SNI43 rod seal made of carbon-filled PTFE

Carbon-filled PTFE is used as the sealing material for the SNI43. The material supports high chemical resistance, low friction, high wear resistance and operation across a wide temperature range.

The V-spring is made of stainless steel 1.4310 according to DIN EN 1008-1. When assessing the materials, the sealing material and spring material must be considered together in relation to the medium and operating conditions.

Media compatibility of the SNI43

The SNI43 is suitable for hydraulic oils of all types. The data sheet also specifies hot air and steam as suitable media.

The profile offers very good resistance across a wide range of media. During selection, verify the resistance of the specific compound to the actual medium and associated operating temperature.

Technical operating limits of the SNI43

The SNI43 has an operating temperature range from -150 to +250 °C. The maximum sliding speed is 15 m/s and the maximum permissible pressure is 35 MPa.

These operating limits are maximum values and may not all be reached simultaneously. Suitability should therefore be assessed using the complete combination of temperature, pressure, sliding speed, medium, lubrication and installation conditions.

Conformity, approvals and certificates

Consult the valid material data sheet for current information about approvals and certificates. This information depends on the specific compound and therefore cannot be listed exhaustively for every version.

Requirements for the cylinder housing, piston rod and installation space

The cylinder housing and piston rod must be provided with chamfers to prevent damage to the rod seal. The length and angle of these installation chamfers must correspond to the installation-space drawing.

The groove flanks require a surface roughness of Ra ≤ 3 µm. The groove base must have a surface roughness of Ra ≤ 1.8 µm. The mating surface of the piston rod requires a surface roughness of Ra ≤ 0.4 µm.

Installation of the SNI43 rod seal

The SNI43 must be installed in an axially open groove. Semi-open or closed installation spaces are also possible for a limited dimensional range. Check the dimensions and associated installation drawing for these configurations.

Deburr sharp edges and provide smooth chamfers and radii. Clean the installation space carefully before installation and remove dust, dirt, metal chips and other contaminants.

Do not pull the seal over sharp edges, threaded ends or recesses such as feather key grooves. Use a mounting sleeve where necessary to protect the profile. Oil or grease the piston rod before installation.

Storage of the SNI43 seal

Store the SNI43 at a temperature below 25 °C. Avoid direct sources of heat, direct sunlight and condensation in the storage area.

The seal must not be exposed to ozone or ionising radiation. The storage recommendations are based on the revision of ISO 2230 dated 16 September 1992.

Selecting the correct SNI43 rod seal

First check the required piston rod and groove dimensions. Align the installation direction with the one-sided pressure load and verify whether an axially open, semi-open or closed installation space is permitted for the selected size.

Also assess the temperature range from -150 to +250 °C, the maximum sliding speed of 15 m/s and the maximum pressure of 35 MPa. These values may not all be reached simultaneously. Check the medium, lubrication conditions, surface requirements and any compound-dependent approvals.
