What is a WB oil seal?

A WB oil seal is a radial shaft seal for the dynamic sealing of rotating machine components. The profile can be used for shafts, hubs and shaft assemblies, among other applications. The sealing function is independent of the direction of shaft rotation. This allows the WB to be used with clockwise, counterclockwise and alternating shaft rotation.

The main sealing lip is pressed against the shaft surface by a garter spring. This construction supports reliable dynamic sealing while the shaft is rotating. When the machine is stationary, the contact between the sealing lip and the shaft provides a reliable static seal. The WB profile does not have an additional protective lip.

A characteristic feature of the WB is its open metal outer casing. This outer casing provides a firm and precise fit in the housing bore. With low-viscosity and gaseous media and in split housings, this design provides only limited sealing along the outside. The WB is available with an NBR or FKM sealing material. The material selection must be matched to the temperature, medium and circumferential speed.

Construction of the WB radial shaft seal

The WB shaft seal consists of a main sealing lip with a garter spring, a metal reinforcing plate and an open metal outer casing. The sealing section is manufactured from NBR or FKM. Unalloyed steel according to DIN EN 10139, formerly DIN 1624, is used for the reinforcing plate and metal construction. The garter spring is made of spring steel according to DIN EN 10270-1.

The spring-loaded sealing lip provides dynamic sealing around the rotating shaft. A separate protective lip is not present. The open metal outer casing supports a firm and precise fit in the housing bore. This distinguishes the WB from comparable profiles with a fully rubber-covered outer casing.

Function with a rotating and stationary shaft

During rotation, the spring-loaded sealing lip of the WB oil seal contacts the shaft surface. This creates a dynamic seal between the rotating shaft and the stationary housing. The sealing function is independent of the direction of rotation. The WB can therefore be used with different directions of rotation, provided that the other technical requirements are met.

When the shaft is stationary, the contact between the sealing lip and the shaft surface continues to provide a reliable static seal. At the same time, the open metal outer casing provides a firm and precise fit in the housing bore. With low-viscosity or gaseous media, the sealing performance along this metal outer surface is limited.

Applications and advantages of the WB profile

The WB oil seal is designed for sealing rotating machine components such as shafts, hubs and shaft assemblies. The profile has a broad range of applications and is suitable for moderately demanding applications within general industry. The spring-loaded main sealing lip provides dynamic sealing around the shaft and, when stationary, provides a reliable static seal between the lip and the shaft surface.

The open metal outer casing is a characteristic feature of the WB profile. This construction provides a firm and precise fit in the housing bore. However, the design has only limited suitability for sealing low-viscosity or gaseous media along the outside. The sealing performance of the metal outer casing is also limited in split housings.

Other advantages of the WB include its long service life, reliable construction and good price-performance ratio. The profile is designed without an additional protective lip. Suitability for a specific application depends on the medium, selected material, pressure, temperature, circumferential speed and design of the housing bore. In particular, check whether an open metal outer casing is suitable for the application.

Open metal outer casing for a precise fit

The open metal outer casing of the WB radial shaft seal provides a firm and precise fit in the housing bore. The metal outer surface distinguishes the WB from oil seals with a fully rubber-covered outer casing. For correct installation, the housing bore and outside diameter of the seal must be precisely matched.

The metal outer casing provides only limited sealing performance with low-viscosity or gaseous media. Sealing along the outside is also limited when installed in split housings. Therefore, determine in advance which static sealing performance is required between the oil seal and the housing. The housing bore must comply with ISO H8 tolerance and have a surface roughness of Rz 10 to 20 µm.

Spring-loaded sealing lip without protective lip

The WB oil seal has one spring-loaded main sealing lip for the dynamic sealing of a rotating shaft. The garter spring supports the contact between the sealing lip and the shaft surface. This helps maintain the sealing function during rotation. When the shaft is stationary, the main sealing lip provides a reliable static seal.

The WB profile does not have an additional protective lip against external dust or dirt. When selecting the seal, it should therefore be checked whether a design without a protective lip is suitable for the operating environment. The open metal outer casing provides a firm and precise fit of the oil seal in the housing bore.

WB oil seal in NBR or FKM

The WB oil seal is available with an NBR or FKM sealing material. Both materials have their own temperature range, maximum circumferential speed and media resistance. The correct material selection is determined by the medium used, the temperature and the speed of the rotating shaft.

NBR can be used at temperatures from -40 to +80 °C and can withstand temperatures up to +100 °C for short periods. The maximum circumferential speed is 10 m/s. The material offers good chemical resistance to various mineral oils, greases and hydraulic fluids. Use with water is also possible up to a maximum temperature of +60 °C.

FKM has a temperature range of -25 to +150 °C and a maximum circumferential speed of 34 m/s. The material offers good resistance to mineral and synthetic oils and greases, engine oil, transmission oil, ATF oil, fuels and various hydrocarbons. When choosing between NBR and FKM, all operating conditions must be assessed together. The maximum pressure, temperature and circumferential speed cannot necessarily be applied simultaneously.

Properties and media resistance of NBR

A WB oil seal made of NBR is suitable for a temperature range of -40 to +80 °C. For short periods, the material can withstand temperatures up to +100 °C. The maximum circumferential speed is 10 m/s. NBR offers good chemical resistance to various mineral oils and greases, including hydraulic fluids of types H, HL and HLP.

NBR can also be used with fire-resistant hydraulic fluids of types HFA and HFB. For HFC fluids, a maximum temperature of approximately +50 °C applies. When used with water, the maximum temperature is +60 °C. NBR has low resistance to ozone, weathering and ageing. This should be taken into account when the seal is exposed to environmental influences.

Properties and media resistance of FKM

A WB oil seal made of FKM has a temperature range of -25 to +150 °C. The maximum circumferential speed is 34 m/s. FKM offers good chemical resistance to mineral oils and greases, synthetic oils and greases, engine oil, transmission oil and ATF oil. These oils can be used at temperatures up to approximately +150 °C.

The material is also resistant to fuels, fire-resistant HFD hydraulic fluids and aliphatic, aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons. When used with water, a maximum temperature of +60 °C applies. FKM has very good resistance to ozone, weathering and ageing. This makes the material suitable when higher temperatures or better environmental resistance are required than NBR can provide.

Technical operating limits of the WB shaft seal

For reliable operation of the WB shaft seal, the maximum pressure, temperature and circumferential speed must be observed. The maximum permissible pressure is 0.05 MPa. Different values apply to NBR and FKM versions with regard to circumferential speed and temperature.

A WB oil seal made of NBR has a temperature range of -40 to +80 °C. For short periods, NBR can withstand temperatures up to +100 °C. The maximum circumferential speed is 10 m/s. An FKM version has a temperature range of -25 to +150 °C and a maximum circumferential speed of 34 m/s.

The stated pressure, temperature and circumferential speed values are maximum limits and cannot necessarily all be reached simultaneously. The medium, material resistance, installation space and condition of the shaft and housing also influence suitability. Always assess the complete combination of operating conditions. In addition, take into account the limited sealing performance of the metal outer casing with low-viscosity and gaseous media and in split housings. The suitability of the selected WB must be checked and tested within the final application.

Maximum pressure and circumferential speed

The WB radial shaft seal can be used at a maximum pressure of 0.05 MPa. For an NBR version, the maximum circumferential speed is 10 m/s. With an FKM version, the circumferential speed can be up to 34 m/s. These limits apply in addition to the material-dependent temperature ranges.

The maximum pressure, circumferential speed and temperature must not automatically be combined. A higher load on one parameter can affect the permissible load within the other operating limits. The medium used and the required sealing performance along the metal outer casing also play a role. Therefore, assess the complete application and test whether the selected WB oil seal functions correctly under the actual operating conditions.

Approvals and certificates per compound

The available approvals and certificates depend on the selected material and the specific compound from which the WB oil seal is manufactured. Therefore, the same certification does not automatically apply to every NBR or FKM version. When a specific approval or conformity is required for an application, this must be checked separately for the selected compound.

Consult the applicable material data sheet for the relevant compound. This specifies which current approvals and certificates apply to the material. The general material designation NBR or FKM alone is insufficient to determine whether an oil seal meets a specific certification requirement. Always check this before selecting or ordering the seal.

Requirements for the shaft, housing and installation space

The installation space for the WB oil seal must be designed in accordance with DIN 3760. Correct dimensions and surface quality of the shaft and housing bore are important for sealing performance and the precise fit of the metal outer casing. Shaft roundness must comply with tolerance class IT8. The shaft must be free from twists, burrs and other damage that could damage the sealing lip.

The shaft surface must have a surface roughness of Rz 1.0 to 4.0 µm. The minimum hardness of the shaft surface is 45 HRC. The shaft tolerance zone must comply with ISO h11. The housing must have a surface roughness of Rz 10 to 20 µm. The housing bore tolerance zone must comply with ISO H8.

These technical requirements support correct operation of the spring-loaded sealing lip and open metal outer casing. An incorrect fit, damaged shaft surface or unsuitable surface roughness can affect performance. Therefore, inspect and clean the complete installation area before installing the WB radial shaft seal.

Specified values for the installation environment

The shaft on which the WB oil seal is installed must comply with ISO h11 tolerance. Roundness must comply with tolerance class IT8. The shaft surface must have a roughness of Rz 1.0 to 4.0 µm and a minimum hardness of 45 HRC. Twists, burrs and damage to the shaft surface are not permitted.

The housing bore must comply with ISO H8 tolerance. The surface roughness of the housing must be between Rz 10 and 20 µm. Design the complete installation space in accordance with DIN 3760. Following these dimensional, hardness and surface requirements supports correct operation of the sealing lip and a firm, precise fit of the open metal outer casing.

Installation and storage of a WB oil seal

Clean the installation space thoroughly before installing the WB oil seal. Completely remove dust, dirt, metal chips and other contaminants. During installation, do not pull the seal over sharp edges, threaded ends or recesses such as keyways. If such areas cannot be avoided, they must be covered with a suitable installation sleeve during installation.

Do not grease the WB oil seal or installation space before installation. Position the seal carefully and straight on the shaft. The oil seal must not tilt during installation. Before installation, check that the sealing lip and metal outer casing are undamaged and that the housing bore meets the specified dimensional and surface requirements.

Store WB oil seals at a temperature below +25 °C. Do not expose the seals to direct sunlight or direct heat sources. Prevent condensation in the storage area and protect the oil seals against ozone and ionising radiation. These storage conditions are in accordance with the recommendations of ISO 2230. A suitable storage environment helps prevent unnecessary deterioration of the materials before installation.

Installing the WB seal carefully

Before installation, clean the shaft, housing bore and complete installation space. Remove dirt, dust and metal chips that could damage the sealing lip, metal outer casing or shaft surface. Do not pull the WB oil seal over sharp edges, threads or recesses such as keyways. Where necessary, use an installation sleeve to temporarily cover these areas.

Do not grease the oil seal or installation space before installation. Then position the WB carefully and straight on the shaft. Prevent the seal from tilting during installation. Check beforehand that the shaft and housing comply with the specified tolerances, hardness and surface requirements to ensure a firm and precise fit.

Storing WB oil seals under the correct conditions

Store WB oil seals at a storage temperature below +25 °C. Do not place the seals in direct sunlight and keep them away from direct heat sources. The storage area must be dry and free from condensation. In addition, protect the oil seals against exposure to ozone and ionising radiation.

These conditions help prevent the sealing material from being unnecessarily affected by heat, light, moisture or radiation during storage. A suitable storage environment helps maintain the properties of the elastomer until the oil seal is installed. The storage conditions for the WB profile are based on the recommendations for storing elastomer products in ISO 2230.

Selecting the right WB oil seal

When selecting a WB oil seal, the dimensions, sealing material and operating conditions must be assessed together. First, determine the required inside diameter, outside diameter and width for the shaft and housing bore. Also assess whether an open metal outer casing is suitable for the housing and the required static sealing performance.

Next, determine whether NBR or FKM best suits the medium, temperature and circumferential speed. NBR has a temperature range starting at -40 °C and a maximum circumferential speed of 10 m/s. FKM can be used at temperatures up to +150 °C and circumferential speeds up to 34 m/s. Carefully match the material to the medium used.

Also check that the maximum pressure of 0.05 MPa is not exceeded. Take into account the limited sealing performance of the metal outer casing with low-viscosity and gaseous media and in split housings. If a specific approval or certification is required, this must be checked separately for the selected compound.
