A WBS oil seal is a radial shaft seal for the dynamic sealing of rotating machine components, such as shafts, hubs and shaft assemblies. The sealing function is independent of the direction of shaft rotation. This allows the profile to be used in a wide range of rotating applications within general industry.
The main sealing lip is pressed against the shaft surface by a garter spring. This construction supports reliable dynamic sealing during rotation. When the machine is stationary, the contact between the main sealing lip and the shaft surface provides a reliable static seal. At the same time, an additional protective lip helps keep moderate amounts of external dust and dirt away from the main sealing lip.
The WBS has an open metal outer casing. This outer casing provides a firm and precise fit in the housing bore. With low-viscosity and gaseous media and when used in split housings, the sealing performance along the outside is limited. The WBS is available with an NBR or FKM sealing material.
The WBS shaft seal consists of a spring-loaded main sealing lip, an additional protective lip and an open metal outer casing. The sealing section is manufactured from NBR or FKM. Unalloyed steel according to DIN EN 10139, formerly DIN 1624, is used for the metal reinforcing plate. The garter spring is made of spring steel according to DIN EN 10270-1.
The main sealing lip provides dynamic and static sealing around the shaft. The protective lip forms an additional barrier against external dust and dirt. The open metal outer casing supports the dimensional stability of the profile and provides a firm interference fit in the housing bore. This combines sealing, protection and precise positioning in a single profile.
During rotation, the spring-loaded main sealing lip contacts the shaft surface. The garter spring supports the contact between the sealing lip and the running surface. This creates a dynamic seal that is independent of the direction of rotation. When the shaft is stationary, the main sealing lip continues to provide a reliable static seal.
The additional protective lip is located on the outside of the sealing section. This lip helps keep moderate amounts of dust and dirt away from the main sealing lip. For correct operation, both the protective lip and main sealing lip must make proper contact with the shaft. The WBS must therefore be installed carefully in a suitable and clean installation space.
The WBS oil seal is designed for sealing rotating machine components, such as shafts, hubs and shaft assemblies. The profile is suitable for moderately demanding applications within general industry. The combination of a spring-loaded main sealing lip and an additional protective lip makes the WBS suitable for installation situations where protection against external contamination is required in addition to sealing performance.
The protective lip helps keep moderate amounts of dust and dirt away from the main sealing lip. This protects the contact area between the main sealing lip and the shaft surface. At the same time, the open metal outer casing provides a firm and precise fit of the oil seal in the housing bore.
Other advantages include a long service life, a broad range of applications and a good price-performance ratio. The WBS has a reliable construction and is manufactured by certified external suppliers. When selecting the seal, take into account the limited sealing performance along the open metal outer casing with low-viscosity and gaseous media and in split housings. Final suitability depends on the medium, material and complete combination of operating conditions.
The additional protective lip of the WBS oil seal is designed to keep moderate amounts of external dust and dirt away from the sealing area. The lip forms an additional barrier in front of the spring-loaded main sealing lip. This reduces the likelihood of contaminants reaching the contact area between the sealing lip and the shaft surface.
The protective effect depends on the amount and type of contamination, the circumferential speed and the quality of the shaft surface. Therefore, check whether the protection level of the WBS is suitable for the actual operating environment. The shaft, housing bore and complete installation space must also be clean and undamaged to support correct operation of both lips.
The open metal outer casing of the WBS radial shaft seal provides a firm and precise fit in the housing bore. The oil seal is installed with an interference fit in the installation space. This keeps the profile correctly positioned during operation.
For a proper fit, the housing bore must comply with ISO H8 tolerance. The specified surface roughness of the housing is Rz 10 to 20 µm. The metal outer casing provides only limited sealing performance with low-viscosity and gaseous media and in split housings. Therefore, check in advance whether the outer casing design is suitable for the medium and housing configuration.
The WBS oil seal is available with an NBR or FKM sealing material. Both materials have their own temperature range and media resistance. The material selection is determined by the operating temperature, medium used and environmental conditions. For both material versions, the maximum circumferential speed of the WBS profile is 8 m/s.
NBR can be used at temperatures from -40 to +80 °C and can withstand temperatures up to +100 °C for short periods. The material offers good chemical resistance to various mineral oils, greases and hydraulic fluids. Use with water is possible up to a maximum temperature of +60 °C.
FKM has a temperature range of -25 to +150 °C. The material offers good resistance to mineral and synthetic oils and greases, fuels and various hydrocarbons. FKM also has very good resistance to ozone, weathering and ageing. The maximum technical values cannot necessarily all be reached simultaneously. Therefore, always assess the complete combination of medium, pressure, temperature and circumferential speed.
A WBS oil seal made of NBR is suitable for a temperature range of -40 to +80 °C. For short periods, the material can withstand temperatures up to +100 °C. NBR offers good chemical resistance to various mineral oils and greases, including hydraulic fluids of types H, HL and HLP.
NBR can also be used with fire-resistant hydraulic fluids of types HFA and HFB. For HFC fluids, a maximum temperature of approximately +50 °C applies. When in contact with water, the maximum temperature is +60 °C. NBR has low resistance to ozone, weathering and ageing. This should be taken into account when the WBS is exposed to environmental influences.
A WBS oil seal made of FKM can be used at temperatures from -25 to +150 °C. FKM offers good chemical resistance to mineral oils and greases, synthetic oils and greases, engine oil, transmission oil and ATF oil. These oils can be used at temperatures up to approximately +150 °C.
FKM is also resistant to fuels, fire-resistant HFD hydraulic fluids and aliphatic, aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons. When in contact with water, a maximum temperature of +60 °C applies. The material has very good resistance to ozone, weathering and ageing. Always check whether the selected FKM compound is suitable for the medium and complete operating conditions.
For reliable operation of the WBS shaft seal, the maximum pressure, temperature and circumferential speed must be observed. The maximum permissible pressure is 0.05 MPa. The maximum circumferential speed is 8 m/s. This speed limit applies to both the NBR and FKM versions. Different permissible temperature ranges apply depending on the sealing material.
A WBS oil seal made of NBR can be used at temperatures from -40 to +80 °C. For short periods, temperatures up to +100 °C are permitted. An FKM version has a temperature range of -25 to +150 °C.
The stated pressure, temperature and circumferential speed values are maximum limits and cannot necessarily all be reached simultaneously. The medium, material resistance, installation space and condition of the shaft and housing also influence suitability. Therefore, always assess the complete combination of operating conditions. The suitability of the selected WBS oil seal must be checked and tested within the final application. This helps determine whether the dimensions, material and technical design are correctly matched to the operating environment.
The WBS radial shaft seal can be used at a maximum pressure of 0.05 MPa. The maximum permissible circumferential speed is 8 m/s. These values apply to the WBS profile and must be assessed in combination with the material-dependent temperature range of NBR or FKM.
The maximum pressure, temperature and circumferential speed must not automatically be combined. A higher load on one parameter can affect the practically permissible load within the other operating limits. The medium and conditions around the protective lip also play a role. Therefore, assess the complete application and test whether the selected WBS functions correctly under the actual operating conditions.
The available approvals and certificates depend on the selected material and the specific compound from which the WBS oil seal is manufactured. Therefore, the same certification does not automatically apply to every NBR or FKM version. When a specific approval or conformity is required within an application, this must be checked separately for the selected compound.
Consult the current material data sheet for the relevant compound. This specifies which approvals and certificates apply to the material. The general material designation NBR or FKM alone is insufficient to determine whether the oil seal meets a specific certification requirement. Therefore, check this before selecting or ordering the WBS.
The installation space for the WBS oil seal should preferably be designed in accordance with DIN 3760. Correct dimensions and surface quality of the shaft and housing bore are important for the operation of the main sealing lip, protective lip and open metal outer casing.
Shaft roundness must comply with tolerance class IT8. The shaft must be free from twists, burrs and other damage that could damage the sealing lips during installation or operation. The shaft surface must have a roughness of Rz 1.0 to 4.0 µm. The minimum hardness of the shaft surface is 45 HRC. The shaft dimensions must comply with ISO h11 tolerance.
The housing bore must comply with ISO H8 tolerance. The specified surface roughness of the housing is Rz 10 to 20 µm. These values support a firm and precise interference fit of the metal outer casing. A damaged shaft surface, incorrect fit or unsuitable surface roughness can affect the sealing and protective performance of the WBS.
The shaft on which the WBS oil seal is installed must comply with ISO h11 tolerance. Shaft roundness must comply with tolerance class IT8. The running surface must be free from twists, burrs and damage. Such imperfections can damage the main sealing lip or protective lip during installation and reduce the performance of the profile.
The shaft surface must have a roughness of Rz 1.0 to 4.0 µm. The minimum surface hardness is 45 HRC. Check these values before installation and clean the running surface carefully. A correctly finished shaft surface supports contact with both lips and contributes to reliable operation and a long service life of the WBS.
The housing bore for the WBS oil seal must comply with ISO H8 tolerance. The surface roughness of the housing must be between Rz 10 and 20 µm. The complete installation space should preferably be designed in accordance with DIN 3760.
These dimensional and surface requirements are important for the open metal outer casing. The WBS is installed in the housing with an interference fit. A correctly dimensioned bore therefore supports firm and precise positioning. Before installation, check the housing for dust, dirt, metal chips, burrs and damage. Also take into account the limited sealing performance of the metal outer casing with low-viscosity and gaseous media and in split housings.
Clean the installation space thoroughly before installing the WBS oil seal. Completely remove dust, dirt, metal chips and other contaminants. During installation, do not pull the seal over sharp edges, threaded ends or recesses such as keyways. If such areas cannot be avoided, they must be covered with a suitable installation sleeve.
Do not grease the WBS oil seal or the installation space before installation. Position the seal carefully and straight on the shaft. The oil seal must not tilt during installation. This helps prevent damage to the main sealing lip, protective lip and open metal outer casing.
Store WBS oil seals at a temperature below +25 °C. Do not expose the seals to direct sunlight or direct heat sources. Prevent condensation in the storage area and protect the products against ozone and ionising radiation. These storage conditions are based on the recommendations of ISO 2230. A clean, dry and suitable storage environment helps preserve the properties of the sealing material until installation.
Before installation, clean the shaft, housing bore and complete installation space. Remove dust, dirt, metal chips and other particles that could damage the shaft surface, sealing lips or metal outer casing. Do not pull the WBS over sharp edges, threads or keyways. Where necessary, use an installation sleeve to temporarily cover these areas.
Do not grease the seal or installation space before installation. Position the WBS carefully and straight on the shaft and prevent the profile from tilting. Also check that the shaft and housing comply with the specified tolerances, hardness and surface roughness. This supports correct fit and operation.

These conditions help prevent the sealing material from being unnecessarily affected by heat, light, moisture or radiation during storage. A suitable storage environment helps preserve the properties of NBR or FKM until the WBS is installed. The storage conditions are based on the recommendations for elastomer products in ISO 2230.
When selecting a WBS oil seal, the required dimensions, sealing material and operating conditions must be assessed together. First, determine the required inside diameter, outside diameter and width for the shaft and housing bore. Next, determine whether NBR or FKM best suits the medium, temperature and environmental influences.
Check that the maximum pressure of 0.05 MPa and maximum circumferential speed of 8 m/s are not exceeded. Also assess whether the additional protective lip provides sufficient protection against the amount of dust and dirt in the operating environment. The WBS is designed to provide protection against moderate external contamination.
Also take into account the open metal outer casing and its limited sealing performance with low-viscosity and gaseous media and in split housings. The tolerances, surface roughness and hardness of the shaft and housing must comply with the technical requirements. If a specific approval or certification is required, this must be checked separately for the selected compound. Finally, test the selected WBS under the actual operating conditions.
