A VA V-ring, which is the "standard type" within these rotary seals, is a rubber seal that is mounted on a rotating shaft. Due to its unique V-shaped lip, this type of seal provides excellent protection against dust, dirt, water, and other contaminants.
The V-ring rotates with the shaft and seals axially against a stationary counter surface, such as a housing or a bearing. This prevents harmful particles from entering, thereby extending the lifespan of bearings and other seals. Thanks to its elastic fit, the VA V-ring remains securely in place without requiring additional fasteners. Moreover, the VA type V-ring has low friction, minimizing wear and energy loss.
The VA V-ring provides a leak-proof seal thanks to its unique V-shaped lip. The V-lip of this seal axially seals against a fixed surface, preventing dust, dirt, moisture, and other contaminants from entering.
Compared to VL and VS V-rings, VA V-rings have a wider sealing profile. This makes VA-type V-rings more resistant to eccentric movements and shaft deflections. The VL V-ring has a slimmer profile and is better suited for compact applications, while the VS V-ring has a reinforced back for greater stability. The VA V-ring combines the flexibility and durability of the VL and VS models, making it versatile and easy to install.
A VA V-ring rotates along with the shaft on which it is mounted, creating an axial seal. At low speeds, the natural tension of the rubber lip ensures a leak-proof seal. As the circumferential speed increases, centrifugal force acts on the V-shaped sealing lip, reducing pressure on the counter surface. At higher speeds (15-20 m/s), the lip may slightly lift, allowing the V-ring to function as a gap seal. This reduces both friction and wear, extending the seal’s lifespan.
VA V-rings are used in various industrial applications where a leak-proof seal is essential. They are mainly found in mechanical engineering, drive technology, motors, gearboxes, and agricultural machinery.
Protection of Bearings and Seals
In mechanical and plant engineering, a VA V-ring protects bearings and seals from dust, dirt, moisture, and other contaminants, ensuring a longer lifespan for machines. In drive technology and gearboxes, these seals primarily prevent lubricants from leaking while keeping external substances out. In electric motors, VA-type V-rings mainly prevent dust and moisture ingress.
Ideal for Harsh and Contaminated Environments
In the agricultural sector, a VA V-ring provides an extra layer of protection against mud, water, and sand. Given the harsh conditions in which these machines operate, this additional protection is crucial for ensuring optimal machine performance.
Our stock of VA V-rings includes VA V-rings made from NBR and VA V-rings made from FKM. Choosing the right material for your application is essential to ensure a leak-proof seal and to guarantee the longest possible service life.
NBR (Nitrile rubber) is the most common material used for VA V-rings due to its excellent resistance to oil, grease, and hydraulic fluids. This makes NBR rubber suitable for industrial applications where the VA V-ring comes into contact with lubricants. Additionally, an NBR VA V-ring can be used in applications ranging from -40°C to +100°C. However, NBR is less resistant to ozone, UV radiation, and high temperatures.
FKM (Viton) is a less commonly used material for VA V-rings due to its higher cost. However, using FKM VA V-rings is necessary in applications with extremely high temperatures. Unlike NBR, FKM is suitable for applications ranging from -25°C to +200°C. Furthermore, VA V-rings made from FKM offer better resistance to aggressive chemicals, fuels, and solvents.
When ordering VA V-rings, it is important to consider the dimensions of the shaft on which the V-ring will be placed. By using the filters at the top of the page, you can easily select the correct shaft diameter for your application. This ensures that the V-ring you order is suitable for your specific shaft. Additionally, it is crucial to determine whether you need NBR or FKM material for your application, as both materials have different specifications, such as chemical resistance and temperature range.
In addition to our standard range of VA V-rings, Sealing Technologies also offers customized solutions through Freudenberg Xpress®. Via Freudenberg Xpress®, we can quickly produce seals in original Freudenberg Sealing Technologies materials and profiles. This can be useful for prototypes, spare parts, or small production runs.
